Challenging consumerism 🎉
Pip Tuffin
The University of Leeds, School of Fine Art
Pip established Project Matter during her final year studying Fine Art at the University of Leeds. Project Matter is a school wide system of resharing material resources across the students through a dedicated website, and a ‘transition trolley’, kept in the school to hold larger materials for exchange. Pip’s solution challenges consumerism by reducing the purchasing of new resources within the Fine Art School and the University of Leeds, facilitating exchange and reuse amongst students, and platforming new thinking about the consumerism that exists within our creative communities amongst a new generation of artists.
Pip has now joined the SAIL team, and is playing a significant role in shaping the approach to developing circularity solutions within the creative and cultural sector of West Yorkshire. Pip is applying the same framework, lessons learnt, and the same courage and tenacity required to lead significant systems and behaviour change required to challenge consumerism, now on an industry-wide scale.

In 2023, the system was used by 50 active members, facilitating exchange between undergraduate and master’s students of over 150 objects. The system continues as a legacy of Pip’s time in the School as part of the School of Fine Art action Plan, with more resources being shared every day.
